রংপুর জেলা
উত্তরে নীলফামারী জেলা ও লালমনিরহাট জেলা, দক্ষিণে গাইবান্ধা জেলা, পূর্বে কুড়িগ্রাম জেলা, পশ্চিমে দিনাজপুর জেলা। মোট আয়তন ২,৩০৮ বর্গকিলোমিটার। আটটি উপজেলা, ৭৬ টি ইউনিয়ন, ১৪৫৫টি মৌজা এবং ১টি সিটি কর্পোরেশন, ৩টি পৌরসভা নিয়ে রংপুর জেলা গঠিত। তিস্তা নদী রংপুর জেলার উত্তর ও উত্তর-পূর্ব সীমান্তকে লালমনিরহাট এবং কুড়িগ্রাম জেলা থেকে আলাদা করেছে।
রংপুর জেলায় ৮টি উপজেলা রয়েছে। এগুলো হল:
- কাউনিয়া,
- গংগাচড়া,
- তারাগঞ্জ,
- পীরগঞ্জ,
- পীরগাছা,
- বদরগঞ্জ,
- মিঠাপুকুর
- রংপুর সদর।
নামকরণের ক্ষেত্রে লোকমুখে প্রচলিত আছে যে পূর্বের ‘রঙ্গপুর’ থেকেই কালক্রমে এই নামটি এসেছে। ইতিহাস থেকে জানা যায় যে উপমহাদেশে ইংরেজরা নীলের চাষ শুরু করে। এই অঞ্চলে মাটি উর্বর হবার কারণে এখানে প্রচুর নীলের চাষ হত। সেই নীলকে স্থানীয় লোকজন রঙ্গ নামেই জানত। কালের বিবর্তনে সেই রঙ্গ থেকে রঙ্গপুর এবং তা থেকেই আজকের রংপুর।
Rangpur district
Nilphamari district and Lalmonirhat district in the north, Gaibandha district in the south, Kurigram district in the east, Dinajpur district in the west. The total area is 2,308 square kilometers. Rangpur district consists of eight upazilas, 76 unions, 1455 mauzas and 1 city corporation, Municipalities. River Teesta separates the northern and northeastern borders of Rangpur district from Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts.
Rangpur district has 8 upazilas. These are:
- Kaunia,
- gangachara,
- Taraganj,
- Pirganj,
- Peargacha,
- Badarganj,
- Mithapukur
- Rangpur headquarters.
In terms of naming, it is popularly believed that this name is derived from the earlier 'Rangpur'. History tells us that the British started indigo cultivation in the subcontinent. Due to the fertile soil in this region, indigo was cultivated in abundance. That blue was known as Ranga by the local people. In the evolution of time Rangpur from that color and today's Rangpur from that.
